21 Jan Adwa Hospital: news from doc. Fasolo at the end of 2019
2019 was a key year for the Adwa hospital.
The activity previously carried out in the temporary structure of the Mission was transferred to the first wing of the new building. The important news is that now medical assistance can be carried out continuously, thanks to the presence of two Cuban doctors, an Ethiopian doctor and Kenyan technicians. The staff therefore allows to offer outpatient visits, diagnosis and basic therapies (with medical internists Felix and Tamrat, laboratory technicians Annette and Ritah, pharmacist Winnie), basic surgical interventions (with Julio – neurosurgeon, but able to perform outpatient operations, Geoffrey – anesthesia technician, Boniface – instrumental nurse). Moreover, there is Anna, head of the analysis laboratory, the tireless Sisters Pauline and Sister Betty del Cottolengo (respectively nurse and physiotherapist), a dozen Ethiopian nurses and some Kenyans, an Italian nurse (Julia). Marco, Eugenio and Gerry are responsible for providing administration and purchases.
This nucleus of professionals in stable activity periodically co-operate with the volunteers of ASPOS and AMOA. During last autumn, three ophthalmologists (Sergio, Massimo and Umberto) and one optic (Simona), an orthopedist (Sandro), a hand surgeon (myself), a neurologist (Renato), two laboratory doctors (Vittorio and Leonarda), a laboratory biologist (Francesca), a radiologist (Andrea), an infectivologist (Fredy), an anesthesiologist (Marzia), 3 gynecologists (Massimo, Giulia and Federica) and a midwife (Luciana), two nurses (Lauretta and Beatrice) and other auxiliaries in the administrative and organizational fields (Leda, Loredana, Giulia). During the Christmas period, as every year, there are dentists and dental technicians (Rino, Matteo, Sara).
The medical and surgical activity has been quite intense. But the prospects for the future are really interesting. Within three years, thanks to the important economic contribution coming from the USA, the hospital building will be completed.
The recruitment of a Cuban surgeon and anesthesiologist is scheduled. In addition, an Italian gynecologist and a head nurse should arrive on a permanent basis, which will make it possible to start up the Maternity Ward, a priority shift in order to offer assistance to mothers and children by obtaining the Primary Hospital recognition.
ASPOS has just purchased numerous devices and aids for the physiotherapy clinic. It is also providing the basic equipment to start the orthopedic activity.
During 2020 it will continue to send specialists.
