Tigray Regional Health Bureau and Kidane Mehret Hospital in Adwa sign agreement

Tigray Regional Health Bureau and Kidane Mehret Hospital in Adwa sign agreement

A new and important step in supporting healthcare in Tigray: an agreement has been officially signed between Dr. Amanuel Haile Aberha, Minister and Director of the Tigray Regional Health Bureau, and Dr. Sergio Daniotti, President of the Banco Farmaceutico Foundation, for the supply of medicines and medical supplies to Kidane Mehret Hospital.

Sister Laura Girotto, founder of the mission and the hospital in Adwa, also attended the signing.

The agreement provides not only for the donation of medicines and medical devices, but also for broader institutional collaboration aimed at strengthening the hospital’s operations.

The Tigray Regional Health Bureau is committed to:

  • covering the salaries and benefits of medical and non-medical staff currently employed at the facility and those to be hired in the future;
  • facilitating the entry of donated medicines and medical supplies into Ethiopia, with exemption from customs duties;
  • facilitating the issuance of visas and work permits for foreign specialized healthcare personnel and technicians;
  • supporting the establishment of university-level nursing schools within Kidane Mehret.

The agreement will be valid until June 30, 2027, with the possibility of renewal, and provides for periodic review to adapt to the needs of the facility and the population.

The document thus consolidates Kidane Mehret’s role as a referral health center for the entire region, capable of offering advanced hospital services—from maternity to pediatrics, from general surgery to ophthalmology—in a context still marked by the consequences of the war, widespread poverty, and a scarcity of medical resources.

Thanks to this collaboration, it will be possible to guarantee more effective treatments, reduce avoidable mortality, and support the tireless work of doctors, nurses, and volunteers who work on the front lines every day to save lives.
